I often remind people that the government does not GIVE anybody ANYTHING. They first steal from all of us (taxes), pocket the lion's share, and then "give back" a tiny bit to maintain the illusion that they're "here to help".
Technically, with their printing press and Cestui Que trusts, they don't really need to tax the populace, but the taxes pay the coupon on their chattel bond sureties (taxpayers) and assist in upholding the illusion that taxes are funding the "de facto government", which they are not.
