There is always a fear underneath hidden as an interest. And it always reflects back at them. This is what they deny and run from. That is why they will first look for a new Shepard who gives them the alleviation of this fear.

And because of this fear and their denial and their interest they will do what any scared animal will do: strike.

It is an art to retrieve that and to let them see it.
