An observation, as an American, I can say that Americans can get whipped into a frenzy over minutia and silliness without much effort. Just name the topic - 'the best way to cook your food', 'the best way to lose weight' , the 'best way to exercise', the (stupid and wrong) food pyramid, the 'best' house/car/pet/designer clothes/dog food, etc.
So... to escalate a covid-flu into a full pandemic wouldn't/didn't take much in this country. Look at how crazy everybody went over masks, double-masks, face shields, those 'bubble' desks apparatus, plexi shields in all stores (even with masks), and the 'wipes' and hand sanitizers.
Most of these are First-World problems. If we go into shortages, etc., from all of this, we may see some attitudes adjust from an 'elitism' to a more sensible engagement of our lives.

Absolutely well said.
