Why on earth do people assume that the police do have a duty to protect general members of the public?

They are enforcers for TPTB and will only serve their interests. You just get to pay for them.

They can only be relied on in situations where your interests happen to align with TPTB.

edit: same for the justice system.

Honestly, back in the day the police cars actually had "Protect and Serve" on the sides of the police cars. As a child, I believed this pertained to citizens. Now it takes on a whole new meaning.
