I've had good results a few years ago running a site based on the discussion forum format. I was more of a Soup Nazi regarding topic hijacking. It kept the threads on topic and brought the forum higher search engine rankings.
In a large discussion forum you can drill down and find the topics you're looking for or want to participate in. Those topics are easier to find at a later date, and similar threads are grouped together.
These days, almost everything follows the Twitter format for short attention spans. The topic of the day gets some brief attention, and no matter how useful the comments may be, everything is buried when the next squirrel runs by. It makes the site more of a pressure release valve than a think tank. Perhaps that's by design. The powers that be wouldn't want Americans getting any serious ideas.
