Because they don’t want the individuals to be able to monetize. Smartest thing anyone could do is open source shit and make money off of service

If you open source you can be undercut in service costs. Patents protect first to market, which should be protected because without it there is no point of pushing innovation, you will never be able to recoup your R&D costs while still offering the lowest service rates.
