That territory surrounding Western Ukraine and the city of Lwów was always Polish... it was only annexed by the Soviets after WW2 because Stalin wanted the land as a prize.

Why would they be on the bad guys side? Russia has oppressed and invaded Poland for several centuries, and forced communism on them for several decades.
