What the heck is going on with these kids?

I'm wondering if there is more to this story because the article says he lives with his "guardian". Was he robbing this store so he can run away because of a bad situation at home, or is it that they needed the money?

Police say the boy got the handgun from a locked cabinet in the home where he lived. He pried open the cabinet to get the gun, which belonged to his guardian.
