• Humility comes from Modern French humilité
• humilité comes from Old French: umelite "modesty, sweetness"
• umelite comes from latin: humilitatem (nominative humilitas) which means baseness
• And the root of that Latin word is: humus: "earth"

• Humiliation comes from pride. Without pride, you cannot be humbled. To be humbled is to be humiliated.
• We have a tendency to credit ourselves when we succeed. We attribute our physical beauty to our healthy diet and consistent exercise. We believe our work ethic created our financial success. We applaud our kindness for our many friendships. Jesus warns that God will humble those that exalt themselves.
• Matthew 23:12 "For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Pride

• prede comes from late old English: pryto
• late Old English prud, prute "excellent, splendid; arrogant, haughty, having or cherishing a high opinion of one's own merits; guilty of the sin of Pride.
• "The proud hate pride – in others," wrote Benjamin Franklin in his Poor Richard's Almanac.
• We see the pride of others with 20/20 vision, while being blind to its presence in ourselves.
• (Lk. 6:41-42; Mt. 7: 3-5) Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

• There is no need for pride in oneself, or to be proud of what you have done. All good comes from God. Not you.

• Some will accept others exalting them. This is also a form of pride and it not good.
• Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. (Matthew 6:1–2)

• Does Jesus himself the son of God not humble himself when he washes the feet of his disciples? And were we not then told to follow what Jesus has done?

• The only way to get around all of this, is basically to say the bible is worthless and you are athiest. Then I have no way to argue since you would then be someone's morals that are backed by nothing.
