It's not an immediate snap decision.
A mafia baits you into their trap until everything you know belongs to them.
They egg you on, blow smoke up your ass, and lead you into accepting terrible things one little bit at a time.
Then, once you finally say "that's as far as you'll get me to go" they spring the trap on you and show you pictures of all your dirty little acts over the years.
Then they tell you that if you don't play ball, it's your wife, kids, relatives, friends that will die in tragic accidents.
The police can't help you, they own the police. Religion can't help you, they own religion.
You have nowhere to go but back into the bosom of the Devil and do as you're told. At least, that's what you've been brainwashed to believe.
They only go after those they know they can find leverage over. A bum with no family or cares in the world is not gonna have anything to leverage them over but their own measly life.
Even then, though, if you do try to come forward despite them threatening everyone you know, they will instead take the lives of the innocent. Like in Uvalde or Buffalo. You'll never know if it was all fake or not, but you can be damn sure they won't stop killing or ruining the lives of innocent people until you relent. They will guilt you saying "It can all stop, all you have to do is play ball. You can have all the riches in the world, and put them into charities if you please. All you have to do is bow down and worship me."
