Apart from the obvious food shortage the other massive problem is that technology advancements have far exceeded most Americans knowledge. Most people don't even understand algorithms in social media, let alone the extent of control it affords the elites or how to protect itself from it.
But my guess is, 1. Money and/or, 2. They actually believe their doing "good" work for humankind, and/or they keep everything so compartmentalized that no one really sees the big picture of what their contributions are.
Specialization. Humans are incredible at understanding anything, but there’s only a limited amount of time and knowledge we have. It’s basically the opposite of “Jack of all trades, master of none”.
This is the same reasoning everyone is all about “Trust the experts”. There is just too much to learn if you don’t trust others but it’s now being used against us.
