Promotion (in chess)
In chess, promotion is the replacement of a pawn with a new queen (the most powerful piece on the board). It occurs when the pawn reaches the opponent's last rank (a final square across the board). It doesn't matter if you still have your original queen. You would now have two.
Promotion, or the mere threat of it, often decides the result in an endgame.
