Washington lost battle after battle. The Continental Army retreated repeatedly. The Red Coats were overwhelming them everywhere. Patriots were on the run. Within a few days, the Continentals would disband and go home.
And then Washington crossed the Delaware during a brutal winter storm. Only one crossing of three made it across that night, Christmas night.
After crossing the icy river in the middle of the night, the army marched more than ten miles in the blizzard, many barefoot, two froze to death.
And the Continentals defeated the Hessians at Trenton.
It was the single most important turning point in the birth of our nation. The rest is history.
We are tired and frustrated, but I dare say not one of us feels like the soldiers did the night they crossed the Delaware.
If they can do it. We can too.
