I remember growing up in southern California's beautiful "San Fernando Valley" in the 60's. No smog equipment on cars, everyone burned their trash in incinerators in the back yard, not much air conditioning. Anyway, I remember walking to school in the heat of summer, (Yes, we actually walked to school in the dim past) and my lungs would literally burn and hurt from breathing the lovely air at that time. Short of breath and all that. Point of story; The air now is much healthier than it was back then. I remember stories in the "paper" about how being outside was like smoking a pack a day or some such thing.
