The downside about baking soda / charcoal / etc. is that it does notably wear down your teeth over time. It's definitely intended to be used in a pinch, as it's more abrasive than formulated toothpaste.

Regardless of where you stand on the effects of fluoride, I would stick to companies that have made studies on how abrasive their formula is, even if you go fluoride free
