Spot on. As a nurse I tried to inform mothers regarding the importance of breastfeeding as opposed to formula feeding. Many pediatricians took exception to that. They told mothers the two were equivalent and most babies do very well with either or. The truth is pediatricians receive many more calls from mothers who have been brainwashed into thinking they won’t be successful at breastfeeding. Time is money. Very little information is taught to doctors in medical school about breastfeeding or how to help a mother breastfeed. Many mothers don’t want to take the time to research the pros and cons. Mothers want the easy route-just like instead of cooking nutritious meals, go through McDonald’s drive through for dinner! The first 7-10 days of breastfeeding can be challenging. Misinformation by family, pediatricians, nursing staff and even a lactation consultant may sabotage the breastfeeding. The same with nursing education-nurses have been brainwashed into thinking doctors are knowledgeable, wouldn’t lie, they know what is best! Patients must be prepared to ask questions and research, don’t blindly follow doctor’s advise.
