..they repealed the 16th Amendment (Congress can collect income taxes, 1913).

Is that even possible?

I don't think any such case was brought before the current SCOTUS session... did it? SCOTUS must have a case before it before it can render a decision. The court doesn't just willy-nilly take on social or legal issues because they feel like it.
