Sounds bad, yes. But a couple things to consider ( yes, I have been involved with specialized armored civilian vehicles). First, the tank probably has the same level of protection from the outside as the passenger compartment. Then at least the same amount of protection towards the passenger compartment. Any explosion that can damage the fuel tank would probably turn everyone inside to jelly. But, if somehow the tank does become damaged and the occupants survive, the tank is filled with a material that will severely limit its ability to explode. It can still leak (slowly) and catch fire, just not explode.
