I just did a short dig and was surprised to learn that "Chief Justice" is only referred to once in the Constitution (regarding impeachment proceedings), but doesn't specify how one is chosen. The takeaway, if Republicans retake Congress, it seems they could change who the Chief Justice is, and certainly if a new Republican President is elected in 2024, there could be a change. I vote for Clarence Thomas :)

Maybe it's a 'de-facto' 'most respected/elder'/'most learned' or 'most honourable' justice or something.. sort of like how Chief's were decided in tribes
