Last night I took a really short shower...like 3 minutes and the hot water was gone!

You need a solar heated water source. Our town's water tower gets full sun, so water from the cold water tap is warm or even hot sometimes. We don't use much from the hot water tap for showers in the summer.

It wouldn't work. If the average temps went up enough to not need heat in the winter, summer would be impossible to handle.
