I know. I'm actually finding here the smaller regional grocery stores like Martins (Giant in Pa.) and Food Lion are cheaper on a lot of things. I have a long drive either way but it's worth a few extra miles. But even those stores are more than making it up on other things.
I need Kleenex and store brand tissues four pack has jumped from about $6 to nearly $9. Guess I'd better buy some hankies.
I wasn't completely joking with the dollhouse food either. Everything is shrinking as the prices go up.
Giant Food isn't the same as Pa. based Giant/Martins. Maybe that confusion is why they call their Virginia stores Martins. I lived in the DC area for a long time. Giant Food is by far the most expensive local grocery store there.
The same was true 30-40 years ago and Safeway wasn't far behind. I shopped at Giant Food a few years ago when my mother was sick and was all over again appalled at the prices.
We don't have Harris Teeter either. Food Lion, Martins, Walmart and one really awful Aldis. That's it. No locally owned small grocers except for a couple of Hispanic shops and one in the city nearby that caters to Indian immigrants. We do have several really good local butchers and direct from local farm markets and I shop at those when I can. This is a very rural area.

Giant prices are even higher than Safeway in MD. Weis is now showing actual empty shelves because it's the cheapest.

Yes. Harris Teeter is substantially better and often cheaper.
