Droplet precautions are 3 feet from the patient is the fallout area...So 3 feet for each of 2 people equals 6 feet. Not defending this as I believe it's an arbitrary number. I also think the spread was fecal oral like many other things.

Doubling the 3 feet makes sense if you were worried about two droplets touching each other. Even if you believe the '3 foot radius' for droplets, you'd be perfectly safe at 4 feet.
