Have you ever been to a local political meeting? And they have other more social events - picnics, dinners and so on. Lots of people there of both sexes and all ages plus grandmothers/grandfathers and mothers/fathers with daughters and sons. Great way of making friends and meeting people. And if you volunteer to help with anything, you'll have more opportunities to meet people. Go for it.
