I think most rational thinking people realize there are usually 3 sides to every story: one side, the opposing side, and the truth. Instead of sympathizing or trying to vilify, it'd be better to seek to understand why x person made x decision back then. So viewing history in that lens can't be harmful as long as the hard evidence is always included.
Critical thinking (as opposed to race theory) is an overlooked factor in education.
