The people you met are likely from the concentration camps that the US liberated. Those were not part of the Holocaust.
They are also where most of the Holocaust pictures I was shown in education actually came from. Yes the conditions we found in those camps were awful, but you have to keep it mind that we were shelling the supply lines long before we liberated the camps. Any food that got through didn't go to prisoners. Yes creating those camps was horrendous. We are guilty of the exact same.
The death camps were all liberated by the Soviet union. This means all we know about the Holocaust comes from the soviets. This causes some problems.
Obviously the first step in researching is to identify what specific evidence exists of the Holocaust. I turned to Holocaust museum for this. They told me that expecting evidence made me an antisemite.
I'm no Holocaust denier, but there is definitely something fishy going on here.
