Not really. You are in possession of illegal material. That would be like taking someone's marijuana and then going to the police with it. You're now in possession
With digital things, you own a copy, but it's still in your possession. If they sift through your forum posts like on this board and find out that you posted things like "Hunter Biden is a pedophile" etc, then they have reason to believe that you knowingly downloaded CP
Now that being said, what are the odds that this is a honeypot? Probably zero. In reality, in order to knowingly set up a sting, they would have to know that the persons depicted are minors, which would mean that a thorough investigation had already taken place of Hunter, which has not happened.
Even if they can't arrest you, people here on this board don't need to give law enforcement another reason to watch them, and downloading this would likely give you another red flag, if you care about what they think
When they look at your history as you stated, then they see that you were working against it. If not then all police detectives would be technically breaking the wall, as well as investigative journalist. Common sense law applies here if properly documented and mapped. For crying out loud, there is the break through story and you all have hand cuffed yourselves, virtually guaranteeing failure to expose? WTF?
Dude, it's literally CP possession, they're not going to believe that everyone is a journalist trying to do the greater good.
Remember who investigates child porn cases. The FBI and state bureaus. They aren't your friend, and they will gladly kick your door in.
That being said, you are unlikely to get caught regardless, but if you do, you're setting yourself up for some serious trouble. Potentially sex crime charges and lifetime sex offender registry.
