Good point...I think though that society as a whole has become increasingly narcissistic and hedonistic, probably as a result of being continuously bombarded with depravity and debauchery by the media, govt., entertainment industry and the cult of celebrity, etc. We were better off when survival and hard work were a higher priority than the pursuit of leisure, pleasure and material accumulation & consumption.
