LDP though has been in charge a long time. And Abe was in the process of campaigning for them before his assassination. Not to mention Abe himself fairly popular for being a long serving politician
Probably more a case of the LDP has more or less been in charge of Japan since the parties founding barring a couple dramatic short term events.
Much like how Putin continuously was elected to major offices in Russia almost since the collapse of the USSR..
People like an amount of certainty/predictability. Especially when uncertainty seems to rule the day. Better the Devil you know and all that. Granted now that Abe’s dead it’s pretty hard to confirm with certainty on whether or not his death affected the outcome.
Abe also made a habit of tweaking Chinas nose and was more or less building a regional Anti-China coalition with Japan as more or less the unofficial leader. He also got restrictions on what forces the JSDF could have/muster eliminated from Japanese law. Making them that much more of a regional power and potent threat.
He’d be a very tempting target for China. And the situation was perfect. Less and looser security then sitting members of the Japanese Government. Still popular enough in Japan and was still fairly well respected on a regional level that his death would be a fairly effective message to both Japan and the coalition they were building.
My question is Abe even dead?
Eh. It’s possible.
