What if the “precipice” is people simply being at the wits end in regards to how fast the country is falling. When “the people reach the precipice” it could mean when people reach the realization of what’s going on?

I'd say 95% of people don't care, until it directly affects them financially. You can take away freedoms all day and they'll keep on keeping on. Most are overleveraged, or living week to week, with tons of debt. When their standard of living drops, and things are unaffordable, that's when they get involved.
