Don't blame me. All I did was a simple google search. I figured there is no way Mel Gibson would make a mistake of that magnitude. To quote from the Wikipedia article.
"The Maya occupied a territory that is now incorporated into the modern countries of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador; the conquest began in the early 16th century and is generally considered to have ended in 1697."
The principalities conquered were considered part of the "Late Post-classic" Maya states. Perhaps that's where the disconnect lies.
There was no mistake by Gibson. Gibson was using what is called creative license and conflated historical events to make the movie interesting. The depiction of the mass sacrifices and the huge population of the Mayan cities we're centuries before the Conquistadors ever set foot in Central America.
Did the "Late Post-classic" Maya commit ritual sacrifice? I'll bet they did. Their neighbors the Aztecs were still committing those sorts of atrocities.
