The coverup is always worse than the crime. Its far more likely they mentioned the story because it was sensational without ever looking into the details. Remember emotions is all that matters to them, not facts. Then when they realized it wasn't some white guy that instead it was an illegal they tried to cover it up because of the bad optics.
