I keep hearing that assertion thrown around without much evidentiary support.

One can hope you are right, but many will fall in line. Look what happened in Uvalde.

If you are arrested your fate is in the hands of the courts, which can be decidedly blue.

Look at the Germans in ww2. Most were normal people like you and me but drank the nazi koolaid anyway. The psychology of the human mind is a constant. Given similar circumstances one can expect similar outcomes.
