Was organizing my garage over this weekend, and when I looked at my cultivator, manual edger, hatchets, pickaxe, and other tools with pointy ends and sharp edges, I thought "wow, that's actually quite the arsenal."

I've always considered knives and things like you describe as allowing a potential threat to get too close. Rifles are best at keeping threats away, pistols second best, and hand weapons like you mention as a distant third.
