Like any rapid, transformative event, there is always a "wild west" period. We are in that wild west period for most of our technologies, especially in the way they all interact and effect our lives. We will wizen up, and figure out how to regulate it, just like we cleaned up the real "wild west" and developed the land. The goal is to make sure we regulate it in a way where we are still free to use it to the best of its ability, and not slaves, plugging away at baby's first terminal while the elites get all the real toys.
