Actually toxic masculinity would be SAYING you're gonna do those things and then wimping out at the last second.
Also the people who do those things often times do it because it's right not because they are showing off. Saving people just to brag about it is, uh, well... still toxic...
I happen to know lots of people who, in theory, run into burning buildings as a career choice. I do not currently, but have previously, known lots of people who did it as volunteers.
You’re spot on, and I’d add that everyone knows the guy who brags about it and most people don’t like him much. There’s plenty of doing, and plenty of talking, and they don’t much overlap in terms of who’s doing what.
