And done. Got my GME DRS’ed today to computer shares. Thanks for the reminder fren!
What does DRSd to computer shares mean?
In the stock market, when you buy from a traditional broker you don’t really have your name on the shares you bought. The brokerage essentially can do whatever they want with your property. That is called “Street Name”, your shares are registered as “Street Name” when being held by a brokerage.
When you Directly Register Shares (DRS), you remove them from the brokerage and DTCC and instead of Street Name, your name is actually placed in the ledger which the company has access to.
So GameStop investors are removing their shares from their brokerage and register their names on their shares directly which GameStop means in GameStop’s shareholder ledger they can see how many shares are owned and by who.
Every quarterly earnings report GameStop has been reporting how many shares have been directly registered. Currently ~46% of the available shares on the market are owned by 160k people, confirmed by GameStop. The average trading volume of GME is currently 3.7MM shares a day and there are ~17MM shares available on the market. You can do the math there on how supply limited this stock is becoming lol.
Direct Registration System. CS is the transfer agent for GME. Lots of good info out there on how to transfer your shares out of your broker and have them in your name.
Transfer to ComputerShare which is the direct registration company for GME. Think of it as the title company for your house. Puts the shares in your name instead of a broker.
Any info on how to do this, and how long it takes?
For most brokers you just call or chat and request it. SuperStonk Reddit will have details for each broker. It usually takes about 3-5 business days from Fidelity.
In simple terms, it means you now have ownership over your stocks. This is supposedly important with the GME stocks. An ape could explain this in infinite more detail. The subreddit of /stonks goes into mad informative detail over this.
How much does it cost? Is it per share? I was waiting until the split happened. Would said shares be pulled out of my Chase account and into a computer shares account? How would selling work? TIA frens any other info please add.
I’m with AmeriTrade. One phone call and they can do it over the phone. Took about 15 min max. Could be done in about 6 min.
I simply buy all of mine direct at computershare.com. The brokerages are all corrupt and in bed with hedgefunds and SEC and DTC.
I use Chase. Very simple process. Call them and say you want a DRS transfer to ComputerShare. Tell them number of shares. Usually takes 3 business days for shares to show up on Computershare.
And it costs nothing. When you need to sell, you log in ComputerShare account and sell.
