If this assassination attempt wasn't the DS's doing then the FBI can pretend they are upholding law and order. Why miss an opportunity to appear to be the good guys for once?
If this assassination attempt WAS the DS's doing then they can "protect" him... on a scale from "make him disappear" to "reward him for his service".
The whole FBI is not a cabal POS sellout. The top echelon was for sure, but that top echelon is mostly gone.

Neither am I, in theory... but, have you seen the symbols painted on many cop cars and patches/badges worn by officers around the country? MOST local police forces are not what they seem, either. They MAY not be the DS we are looking for, but they are beholden to larger organizations that are NOT... lets, say... normal. At least not in the way you probably think of normal.
