It wasn't Roseanne herself, but the people who were also controlling her at the time that brought Whedon in.

In Donald Barr's weird SF book "Space Relations" he talked about the elite "breeding future slaves". They treat them like cattle. They have their slaves breed more slaves. This happened in Hollywood as well.
