I find it dasting that owls are actually some of the dumbest birds, yet they symbolize 'wisdom'. Their visual cortex is so large it takes up too much brain space for them to be intelligent.

They symbolize wisdom because they can see in the dark when others are blind. Their heads also turn in a 360 degree radius so they can see everything around them.

It's not literal, it's metaphor.
