That's not an exception - you just worded it wrong.
You don't 'identify' as a follower of Jesus, you ARE a follower of Jesus.
Identify:establish or indicate who or what (someone or something) is.
We all have identities that we hold onto. Mine is Christ
But why 'establish or indicate' what you are, instead of just stating the fact that you are?
Jesus tells us to "Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one." -- Matt 5:37
I think you might be buying into the 'virtue signalling phrase' of 'identify'.
I'm just having some fun friend. Using there words for our gain. Bringing Christ light out in the open.

It's a noble endeavor, but you may want to consider what the overall result is of 'using their words'. It strengthens their ability to change the language (for their gain).
Just a thought.
