Just read an article about leveraging hunger to make people work harder. It said menial jobs, hard work jobs is easier to get slaves to be more productive if tied to hunger. This let's the wealthy profit more as the worker scrambles to feed themselves and their families. They are so concerned for food/ clothing/shelter that they have no time for anything else. Just substance living. Perfect for a lifetime of toil and subservience.
