In the UK, the word fag is a slang term for a cigarette. When I was working in New York many years ago, I was outside having a cigarette with an American co worker who happened to be gay, a British colleague saw me smoking and asked if they could 'pinch a fag'. Without missing a beat Roy, the gay co worker replied 'if you must but mind your grip'. It still makes me laugh to this day thinking of it.
