I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands. — Psalm 143:5
No doubt you have heard the old saying “forgive and forget.” While I understand the premise of the statement, it is difficult for us to forget. Outside of disease that may affect our memory or traumatic injury, our minds are vivid storage banks of memories. We remember things all throughout life from a variety of places and experiences.
As David wrote this Psalm, he was asking God to hear his prayer and address a situation that he found himself in. As he started into the situation, he found himself here in verse 5 where he said he remembered the days of old and that he often found himself thinking about the works of God.
While David may have found himself in the middle of a situation, he was going back and remembering times in his past when God had intervened. He remembered the days when he found himself in trouble and God delivered him. He thought about the times that he found himself depressed and feeling defeated, yet God was faithful and true.
David found inspiration and encouragement knowing that God had taken care of things before. God was faithful in days past and he knew that based on God’s track record, God was able to do something in his current situation. It’s a great reminder that no matter what we face, it is never a lost cause with God on our side!
The challenges may seem so great that you don’t see a way through. Remember God is able. The difficulty may seem so large that you don’t believe you’ll survive. Remember, God is able! Time and again God has proven that He is more than enough to handle anything that comes into our lives. Don’t get caught up on what is taking place. Remember that God is more than enough to overcome anything that life may bring!
