I was talking to my daughter yesterday, and she was telling me about a friend who had a miscarriage at 38 weeks. She is at the age where her friends are all trying to have kids. So I asked about miscarriages - most of her friends have had them now, and no one is willing to even admit they might be pregnant until they are about 4 months along.
This is a story that should be in the news every day now, with calls for class action lawsuits.
Full term is 40 weeks, 38 should be viable and a good weight. Did she mean a stillborn?
She said miscarriage. I know that seems odd. She's usually pretty accurate, so I assume that's what her friend told her, which probably came from the doctors. I said "that's unheard of", and she agreed. But she's seeing weird medical issues in many of her friends. My daughter is one who people tend to confide in (way more than is normal - even shocks her at times).
I am very sure the friend used the wrong term. A miscarriage happens when a woman loses a pregnancy before the 20th week. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/pregnancy-loss-miscarriage/symptoms-causes/syc-20354298
Wry sad none the less.
FWIW it’s fairly common for a woman’s first pregnancy to end up in early term miscarriage. That late is odd for sure.
