Ponder things from different perspectives, question them from various angles and motivations and look larger around them, downrange from them, see if something larger attaches.

Could it be simply, trust a dog to be a dog, trust a politician to be a politician, trust a lawyer to be a lawyer, trust a snake to be a snake?

Perhaps not 'trust' as in Good Guy, but maybe trust as in 'he can be relied upon to act as we think he will.'
