Think differently. How much would it be worth to buy Britney Spears, and control all her endorsements? Being a star gives you a big voice to use or squander, products and ideas to push or to sell to the highest bidder, and ability to set an agenda, to captivate the public. Manchester United is obviously not Britney nor Beyoncé, but it grants a similar type of power with its platform. Plus it's probably fun.
Fun? Sheesh. Sports is a gigantic bore, and the players are not all that bright (a few exceptions, I guess). Elon is not famous for suffering fools gladly.
ADDED LATER: A much better use of some of Elon's money would be to finance a drilling expedition to explore this recently discovered impact crater from 66 million years ago:
