"self-pitying martyr types with unresolved rage issues."
Shit, you described my mother...
And no she is not worthy of sympathy, she is a vicious emotional abuser. She didn't call names, she would actually do something very nice for me, then spend the next 6 months gaslighting and guilting over the fact she did something nice and I didn't "appreciate it" enough.
And before you ask, I am fine. I've long since worked though things and learned to deal with the person I was supposed to be nurtured by is a person worthy of contempt. My experience is Good friends who can open your eyes that it was them, not you, are worth everything, and therapy is largely useless.
Good friends are the best therapy. Because they know you better than you know yourself, and they truly want what's best for you. Plus, if they are really good friends they will tell you when you are full of shit or to stop feeling sorry for yourself. That's my experience.
