Why does anyone need to get permission from the government to get married? Straight or gay? Why does that exist for a license?

a legal union instrument would have been a much better solution for gays civil rights relating to medical decisions, assets and such...but then the rabid "gay marriage cult" made a circus out of a basic civil rights issue, in my opinion...
