Why does anyone need to get permission from the government to get married? Straight or gay? Why does that exist for a license?

All these good questions now that we are awake! Why do people with mortgages get a property tax mortgage deduction, but if you pay off your mortgage you no longer get the deduction but pay more in property taxes?
To keep us slaves to debt and fees....
