You can only do so much on the grand scale but a lot on the small scale. Lead by example. Keep yourself and your immediate family calm by explaining basically what you mentioned. We resist peacefully and use violence in self-defense only. You can do it with your neighbors, too. Why not have a neighborhood meeting discussing exactly this topic? On the grander scale, you can make the case online and inspire others to do it in their communities, as well.

Become as independent as possible. A self sustained iron man. Have real friends and know a scammer when you see one. Don't get too wrapped up in a life-tangent that takes you too far away from what you'd actually like to accomplish in your lifetime. If you are spiritual- try to find God. If you are a heathen- try to find your spiritual energy and raise it through meditation/sayings/prayer.

Leave the country honestly, that's what I'm doing if a "civil war"starts until i can accurately evaluate the situation. I'm not saying i wouldn't help in a real civil war but if one "starts" I'm going to need some time to assess the situation before getting involved then i can return to help if it's real. There's too much possibility for glowie bullshit to occur in the early stages where no one is really sure what's going on.
